In what has been a challenging time for the denim industry—with mill

location closures, talent losses and a difficult business climate—there are still

reasons to find joy. This issue of SJ Denim looks at the innovators and

creators who continue to find purpose and inspiration in the fabric.

We profile designer Ksenia Schnaider, who upcycles jeans into unexpected

silhouettes out of a production facility in Kyiv, Ukraine. We also catch up with

two denim players who are focusing on local production: Sweden’s Jeanerica

and Italy’s Candiani Denim, the latter of which operates a micro factory in

Milan.

Denim is a constant in most consumers’ wardrobes, but trends offer an

opportunity to put a new spin on the staple garments. Colored jeans are

staging a comeback on the runways and commercial collections. Although

the latest iterations look different than the styles in the 2010s, a wider range

of hues and patterns are bringing newness to denim. At the same time,

comfort is still king, as brands and manufacturers continue to create drapey

denim that feels like sweatpants or that incorporates stretch for ease of

movement.
